New declaration a turning point for rural women

To commemorate International Day for Rural Women on October 15, We Effect and partners in Macedonia hosted an event to celebrate the signing of a declaration to advance socio-economic rights for women living in the rural areas.

– By excluding rural women we are denying their rights, but we are also denying ourselves the opportunity to learn from their extensive knowledge and experience, says Sian Maseko, We Effect Senior Gender Advisor.

This was an important event attended by the Minister of Labour and Social Policy and Minister of Agriculture, that signaled a strong commitment from the government to advancing the rights of women living in the rural areas.

The event – funded by We Effect and UN Women and hosted together with the National Federation of Farmers and the Rural Development Network – highlighted the importance of listening to women’s voices and ensuring that women have space and opportunity to speak for themselves about issues affecting them.

The opening panel was followed by a discussion with rural women, during which they showcased their achievements as leaders, entrepreneurs, mothers and innovators reminding the audience of the power and agency of women living in the rural areas.

– This declaration marks a turning point for rural women in Macedonia. We Effect will continue to support the partners in Macedonia to ensure that women living in the rural areas have their rights recognized, protected and affirmed, says Sian Maseko, We Effect Senior Gender Advisor.
